Review: Gaucho Restaurant

Gaucho - fine dining and grill
Sam’s Club Mall – Nonling Lu - Dong Hai Yuen area - Futian

A lone gaucho on horseback rides slowly across the Argentine pampas and savors strong tea from a wooden cup with a metal stem. He gazes across the horizon and sees the Sam’s Club Mall on Nongling Road past Hong Li. Whoops, wrong movie.

Easy to get to and hard to find, the Gaucho Restaurant is a place that South American cowboys would hang out at if they were romancing a little filly or cutting a business deal.

From Sam’s, walk past the Starbuck’s almost to the end of the building and take the escalator to the second floor, then turn left and go past the UCC Cho Cho Café, the Macau Restaurant and you are there. Best of all, there aren’t teeming hordes of consumers and it’s close to empty.

Ambiance: Looks like it could be in Buenos Aires. The décor with cowhide-trimmed booths is pleasantly upscale. The environment is quiet and relaxing .The soft pop songs are non-intrusive and the staff, courteous and attentive. Doris, the waitress practiced her best English but would appreciate more lessons.

Food: We tried the following two entrees: The Gaucho burger (250 grams, 68 rmb) was twice the size of a Big Mac and had the usual added value calories like an egg, cheese, bacon, and for health, lettuce and pickles. It came with a few fries and a garnish. Fresh tasting and the ground beef of decent quality, but it tasted bland to my California tastes. Then again, generally the food is plain in South America if you compare it to North America.

The Chilean Sea Bass (68rmb), in a creamy herb sauce with sautéed potatoes and a cream of asparagus soup looked promising on the menu. Unfortunately, it was the size of a minnow, about six bites of subtly sauced sea bass.

Other menu items include: Beef Stroganoff (78 rmb), Angus Sirloin (138-210 rmb), Tenderloin (198), Giant Scallops (98 rmb), shrimp cocktail (48 rmb), a dozen oysters (160 rmb), and an afternoon tea set (28 rmb).

Drink: There is an extensive imported wine list
